Instagram new feature similar to BeReal app under internal testing

The pop seen in the tweet shows IG Candid challenges speak the same language as BeReal: it invites users with a notification every day at a different time to capture and share a dual photo of themselves and their surroundings, showing what they’re up to. Users will have 2 minutes time limit to respond by opening up the Instagram camera and shooting a picture using both – front and rear – cameras. Users can then upload it to their Instagram stories.

A Meta spokesperson, Christine Pai, told The Verge: “This feature is an internal prototype, and not testing externally.” This means Instagram is internally testing it and not on any external group of Instagram users. It also means that the company could someday bring the IG Candid feature to the platform if they plan to roll it out publicly. 

BeReal is currently sitting at the Top 10 spot on the Top Free Apps section on iOS App Store, but it wasn’t an overnight success. 2020 saw BeReal’s debut and gradually gained the public’s interest for being realistic as it challenges users to capture photos at a random time when they might be working, shopping, or watching TV with a 2 minutes timer to complete the challenge. In this short time, users won’t have time to nail their photo game with the superior background or photoshop image that Instagram is known for.
