Internet speedtest global index: India ranking, what went up and what down – Times of India

Internet Speedtest Global Index for the month of November 2022 has been released by Ookla, the company that offers network intelligence and connectivity insights. According to Ookla, in the month of November, India recorded 18.26 Mbps median mobile download speeds which is better than 16.50 Mbps in October 2022. With this, the country has shown significant improvement in its global ranking and is now at 105 position from 113 in October.
However, India decreased one spot in rank globally for overall median fixed broadband speeds and is now at 80th position from 79th in October. India’s performance in fixed median download speeds witnessed a slight increase from 48.78 in October to 49.09 Mbps in November.
According to the November Speedtest Global Index, Qatar leads the chart for global median mobile speeds, whereas Senegal jumps 16 spots in rank globally. For fixed broadband download speeds, Chile remains on top position, and Palestine and Bhutan increased 14 spots in rank globally.
5G debut in October in India
In October, India recorded a 13-month high in mobile and fixed broadband download speed. The country had recorded the highest median mobile download speed (from 13.87 Mbps in September to 16.50 Mbps in October). Both Airtel and Jio launched 5G in India in October 2022. Both the companies are steadily growing their footprint across the country. Airtel 5G Plus is available in around 13 cities across the country, with Shimla latest to join the list. Reliance Jio True 5G service is available under beta right now. The beta is available in 10-plus cities.
What is Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index
Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index ranks mobile and fixed broadband speeds from around the world on a monthly basis. Data for the Global Index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using Speedtest every month to test their internet performance. Results for mobile are based on all cellular technologies. Fixed broadband includes mobile WiFi results. Results are updated mid-month for the previous month.
