ipad: Apple explains why Stage Manager on iPad will work on M1-powered models only – Times of India

Stage Manager, for the uninitiated, makes multitasking on the iPad a better experience. Users can resize apps, and connect the iPad to an external display to get more done. However, there’s a catch — Stage Manager works only with M1-powered iPad variants.

During WWDC 2022, Apple gave a glimpse into a host of features coming across its devices. For iPadOS, the standout feature was Stage Manager. Stage Manager, for the uninitiated, makes multitasking on the iPad a better experience. Users can resize apps, and connect the iPad to an external display to get more done. However, there’s a catch — Stage Manager works only with M1-powered iPad variants. This means that unless you have an iPad Pro or the new iPad Air you will not be able to use the Stage Manager feature.
Apple has given an explanation on why Stage Manager is being restricted to just M1 iPads. According to multiple reports, Apple issued a statement clarifying, “Stage Manager is a fully integrated experience that provides all-new windowing experience that is incredibly fast and responsive and allow users to run 8 apps simultaneously across iPad and an external display with up to 6K resolution. Delivering this experience with the immediacy users expect from iPad’s touch-first experience requires large internal memory, incredibly fast storage, and flexible external display I/O, all of which are delivered by iPads with the M1 chip.”
With iPadOS, Apple has been attempting to bring the iPad as close to a desktop-like experience. Apple with iPadOS 16 has introduced other collaboration features, which will work across iPad models. iPadOS 16 is already in beta mode for developers. It is expected that the public beta of iPadOS 16 will roll out sometime next month. As for the final public version, we can expect it to arrive sometime in September or October.
