iPad mini 6: Release date, price, specs and leaks
The iPad mini 6 is tipped to launch this year, and it’s expected to bring a host of upgrades that should help reinvent Apple’s small tablet. Based on the rumors we’ve heard thus far, the iPad mini 6 should sport a larger display with slimmer bezels, give you more real estate without having to carry a bigger design.
We’re also hearing that the iPad mini 6 could offer the same blistering speed as the iPhone 12, Touch ID support (sorry, no Face ID), USB-C and other upgrades. Plus, you should still be able to use the Apple Pencil, and it could come in a more compact design for the iPad mini.
In other words, the iPad mini 6 easily has the potential to land on our best tablet list. Here’s everything we know about the iPad mini 6 so far based on the leaks and rumors.
iPad mini 6 release date and price
A research note from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple plans to release the iPad mini 6 in the first half of 2021. The iPad mini 5 came out in March 2019.
A Korean blog named Naver, which doesn’t have a strong track record for rumors and leaks, claims an iPad mini Pro is coming out in the second half of 2021. Given that the first half of the year is almost over, we don’t have high hopes that the iPad mini 6 is launching soon.
The iPad mini 6 will likely keep the $399 price we see in its predecessor. Apple has generally kept its tablets at the same price over the years, and the iPad mini starts with 64GB of storage, which gives it a better value proposition against the 32GB $329 iPad.
The 256GB iPad mini costs $149 more, at $549, and that price-to-storage upgrade pattern also looks to continue.
iPad mini 6 display and Touch ID
The biggest bit of news from Ming Chi-Kuo’s reports is that the iPad mini 6 won’t be so miniature. The new iPad mini is expected to have an 8.4-inch screen, according to Japanese site Mac Otakara, which will be a sizable increase from the iPad mini 5’s 7.9-inch screen.
Kuo’s also suggested that the next iPad mini is one of the devices that Apple’s considering using a Mini-LED screen, but that sounds a bit far-fetched. Our bet is that Apple will keep this feature for the premium iPad Pro 202112.9-inch.
While we don’t expect the iPad mini 6 to offer Touch ID in the display, leaker Jon Prosser claims that there could be a Touch ID button on the side of the design, similar to the iPad Air 4.
iPad mini 6 processor and specs
FrontPageTech’s Jon Prosser says that the new iPad mini 6 will be powered by the A14 Bionic chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 12 lineup. In addition, the Lightning port could be replaced by USB-C, and the iPad mini 6 may offer optional 5G.
A previous post at the Chinese tech site MyDrivers.com (when passed through Google Translate) suggests that the iPad mini 6 will feature an A13 processor, which makes sense as an upgrade from the A12 Bionic chips in the iPad mini 5.
iPad mini 6 design
A series of renders put together by leaker Jon Prosser and RendersbyIan show an iPad mini 6 with smaller bezels and no more home button. The 7.9-inch display grows to 8.5 inches in these renders, and the power button on the top right side is said to double as a Touch ID button.
Prosser’s sources suggest that at 206.3mm x 137.8mm x 6.1mm, the iPad mini 6 will be just 3mm taller and wider than its diminutive predecessor.
iPad mini 6 outlook
The iPad mini 6 leaks and rumors suggest that Apple is set to unleash one of the best small tablets yet. We’re all for smaller bezels, a bigger display and more power, and having Touch ID support would be welcome. And we will not be said to see Lightning go.
