iPhone 15 roundup: specifications, design, price, launch date, and more

While it’s not been long since the iPhone 14 series launch, the leaks and reports regarding iPhone 15 series have already started coming in. Nothing is made official till the very last moment; however, there are reports Apple could finally make the switch to USB Type-C port on every iPhone 15 model. Along with that, rumours are rife that the top-end model iPhone 15 Pro Max may ditch the ‘Pro Max’ moniker. The handset is likely to be called iPhone 15 Ultra. On that note, let’s take a quick look at iPhone 15 lineup’s expected specifications, price, launch date, and more.

iPhone 15 series launch date

With iPhone launches, apart from the iPhone SE, generally taking place in the fall of every year, we can expect Apple to follow the same suit by unveiling the iPhone 15 series sometime in September 2023. The invites for the launch event are typically sent out a couple of weeks prior which is when we will get to know the exact launch date.

iPhone 15 series design

The iPhone 15 is tipped to feature one of the biggest design changes. As per reports, all the models in the iPhone 15 series will ditch Apple’s proprietary Lightning port and instead opt for a USB Type-C charging solution. This move could be in place to comply with the European Union’s mandate to implement USB-C across all electronic devices sold in the region which Apple may have to consider seriously while making it put USB-C on all iPhones irrespective of the country. With Apple already ditching the Lightning port on all of its current iPad and MacBook lineup, it may finally be the time for iPhone to make the transition to USB-C. Besides that, regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus both may carry the same transfer speeds as current lightning iPhones, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max could come with faster speeds to have a differentiating factor.

Coming to the side frame, rumour has it that the iPhone 15 Pro models may feature solid-state volume and power buttons, similar to the home button found on iPhone SE and other iPhones before 2017. The concept here is to replicate the effect and functionality of Force Touch feature of the trackpad on MacBooks. The iPhone 15 series is also tipped to feature curved side frames, something similar to the iPhone 5C along with a titanium frame and body.

iPhone 15 series specifications

Let’s take a look at the key rumoured specifications of the iPhone 15 series.

Display

iPhone 15 display

The iPhone 15 lineup is expected to retain the same display sizes across all the iPhones. This means the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro should have a 6.1-inch display while the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max may carry 6.7-inch displays. Furthermore, to enhance the display experience, the non-Pro iPhone 15 models may carry the pill-shaped Dynamic Island introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro series instead of the ageing notch. Unfortunately, Apple may once again reserve the high refresh rate support for just the Pro models in the iPhone 15 lineup.

Cameras

As for the optics on the iPhone 15 lineup, Apple may have no plans to bring significant hardware upgrades to the cameras, especially since it introduced a bunch of new sensors on the iPhone 14 series including a 48MP primary lens on the Pro models. However, there are reports that the company is working on a periscope lens technology that could end up making its way on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. A periscope lens will enable superior optical zoom capabilities that could allow going up to 5x or 10x zoom levels, as opposed to the current 3x optical zoom on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Chipset

Apple A16

The performance side of things on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max could be taken care of by the yet-to-be-announced Apple A17 while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus may run on the A16 Bionic found on the iPhone 14 Pro. Utilising previous generations’ chipsets on the standard iPhone 15 variants allows Apple to have a differentiating factor in place between the Pro and non-Pro models. Now coming back to the Apple A17, the company’s chip manufacturer, TSMC is said to use a 3nm process to develop the chipset that will result in better battery efficiency and provide a performance boost by 10 to 15 percent over the current chip. Apple could once again pack in Qualcomm-made modem chips for mobile connectivity across all the iPhone 15 models.

Furthermore, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max may get 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB. As for the vanilla iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, the RAM configuration could remain unchanged at 6GB with 128GB as the base internal storage.

iPhone 15 series price in India

The iPhone 15 models could come with a similar price tag to that of the iPhone 14 series in India, at least for the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. To recall, the iPhone 14 launched at a price of Rs 79,900 while the iPhone 14 Plus was priced at Rs 89,900 with 128GB being the base storage on both. As for the price of the Pro variants, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone Pro Max currently start at Rs 1,29,900 and Rs 1,39,900 respectively for the 128GB storage variant. So far as the pricing of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are concerned, Apple could either retain the same pricing or hike it depending upon the upgrades both the devices come with.
