iphone: Apple iPhone users to get parts and service history feature: What is it and how it works

Apple is gearing up to roll out the iOS 15.2 update for eligible iPhones. Most of the features that will be available with the major update have already been spotted in the various beta releases. Now, the company has announced that with iOS 15.2, will roll out a new ‘parts and service history’ feature for iPhones. The tech giant announced the feature in a support document on its website. Apple revealed the new feature in the same week it rolled out the Release Candidate version of iOS 15.2.
What is the parts and service history feature on iPhone
As the name suggests, the feature allows users to see the parts and service history of their iPhone if the battery, display or camera has been replaced. Users can go to Settings > General > About to access the feature. The feature won’t be available for users if no repairs have been conducted on their ‌iPhone‌.
According to Apple’s support document, users of iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation), can see if the battery has been replaced. Users of iPhone 11 models, iPhone 12 models and iPhone 13 models can see if the battery or display have been replaced. Users of iPhone 12 models and iPhone 13 models can see if the battery, display, or camera have been replaced.
How parts and service history feature on iPhone works
If the service was done using genuine Apple parts and tools, users will see ‘Genuine Apple Part’ next to the part. If the user’s iPhone has connected to the internet since the service was performed, they can tap the part to see more information, including the date of the service.
Users will see an ‘Unknown Part’ message if the part installation is incomplete or if the part was replaced with a non-genuine part, it was already used or installed in another iPhone or it isn’t functioning as expected.
For display and battery, users may see an additional message that says, “Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone.” This means that the company has updated the device information maintained for the iPhone for service needs, safety analysis and to improve future products.
