iPhone price history in India: from iPhone X to iPhone 14

Apple is a few hours away from announcing the iPhone 14 lineup. If you’ve been following the numerous reports popping up ever since last year, you will be aware that Apple plans to launch four iPhone 14 models – 6.1-inch iPhone 14, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. There will be no iPhone 14 mini this time around as the previous two mini iPhone models did not sell well. While the iPhone 14’s design and hardware are well known by now, the biggest question that will be answered tomorrow is the price.

Ahead of the Apple event, there have been several reports on iPhone 14 price expectations already. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said earlier that the iPhone 14 series will start from $799 after predicting a 15 percent increase in the average selling price. More recently, TrendForce contradicted Kuo by suggesting more modest pricing from Apple, starting from $749. But how will this translate in India?

Let’s take a look at how Apple has priced its iPhones in India over the past few years to understand what we can expect from the iPhone 14.

iPhone price history in India

Arguably, the turning point for the iPhone was the launch of the iPhone X in 2017. It marked a new direction for the company with iPhones offering slimmer bezels and a wide notch, something we have come to associate an iPhone with.

2017: iPhone X price in India starts from Rs 89,000

The iPhone X was a special tenth-anniversary edition device, and so it also came with a special high-end price tag in India. The 64GB version was priced at Rs 89,000 while the 128GB variant was available for Rs 1,02,000.

2018: iPhone XR price in India starts from Rs 76,900

The iPhone XR was the most affordable new iPhone in 2018. Its starting price of Rs 76,900 in India due to customs duty and taxes, however, made the device far less appealing. Still, the XR managed to sell extremely well in the country, especially after price cuts and festive sale discounts.

2019: iPhone 11 price in India starts from Rs 64,900

With the launch of the iPhone 11, Apple managed to bring the starting price of its flagship iPhone down significantly in the country. The iPhone 11 has been one of the best-selling iPhones in India, especially following several price cuts and festive sale discounts that brought its price down to under Rs 40,000.

2020 (April): iPhone prices increased due to GST hike

Following the Indian government’s increase of GST rates from 12 percent to 18 percent for smartphones, Apple had to hike the prices of the iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and others. This would also go on to affect the prices of future iPhones.

2020 (October): iPhone 12 mini price in India starts from Rs 69,900

Apple introduced a mini iPhone model for the first time with the iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 12 mini started at Rs 69,900. This also meant the regular-sized 6.1-inch iPhone 12 became more expensive at Rs 79,900 compared to the iPhone 11 the previous year.

2021: iPhone 13 mini price in India starts from Rs 69,900

Apple did not change the starting price of the iPhone 13 mini, but the company did increase the base storage to 128GB. This once again pushed the starting price of the regular iPhone 13 to Rs 79,900. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max were launched for upwards of Rs 1,19,000 in the country.

2022: iPhone 14 price in India could start from Rs 79,900

Since Apple is not planning to launch an iPhone 14 mini, the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 will be the default entry iPhone in the lineup. This means that the iPhone 14 will not come in at Rs 69,900 in India. The entry price of the iPhone 14 is likely going to be Rs 79,900, making it dearer for Apple fans in India.

Alternatively, if Apple’s intention is to start pushing customers towards the new 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, it could price the iPhone 14 at Rs 69,900 and the Max version at Rs 79,900. This is mere speculation at the moment. We will know the iPhone 14 series price in India soon after tomorrow’s Apple event. Stay tuned.
