It appears Apple made a mistake with the iPhone 14 Plus
TL;DR
- Preorders opened up for the iPhone 14 series last Friday, with delivery for all models beginning tomorrow — except for the Plus.
- Delivery estimates for the base model, Pro, and Pro Max are delayed by days to weeks.
- The iPhone 14 Plus remains available for same-day delivery upon launch.
Within the same week of Apple’s “Far Out” event, all models of the iPhone 14 went up for preorder. After nearly a week of being available for preorder, it appears as if demand for the iPhone 14 Plus is low compared to the rest of the lineup.
Last Friday, preorders for the latest iPhone went live. Although the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are all facing estimated delivery delays, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case for the iPhone 14 Plus.
According to MacRumors, same-day delivery for the iPhone 14 Plus is still available. The fact that — unlike the other models — there still is no estimated delay for delivery, could suggest that demand for the handset is low. This seems to support the expectations set by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
According to Kuo, demand for the iPhone 14 Plus is far lower than what the demand was for last year’s iPhone 13 Mini. Given that the Plus effectively replaced the Mini for this year’s lineup is not a good sign. “Apple’s product segmentation strategy for standard models fails this year,” said Kuo.
Outside of its 6.7-inch display and slightly larger battery, the iPhone 14 Plus doesn’t offer anything that sets it apart from the iPhone 14. It’s essentially just a bigger version of the base model. However, the Plus is $100 more expensive than the base model. Given Apple’s struggles with the iPhone 13 Mini and what looks like could be a similar situation with the iPhone 14 Plus, maybe size isn’t everything when it comes to what iPhone fans want from Apple.
