IT ministry asks for WhatsApp outage report from Meta India: Report – Times of India

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has reportedly asked Meta India to present a report for the recent WhatsApp outage that affected several users worldwide. Starting around 12 pm today, WhatsApp users across the world started facing issues while making calls and sending messages on the platform while Indian users complained about issues with sending photos and videos on WhatsApp. Downdetector also reported this outage across several countries which stretched for almost two hours. However, Meta has now acknowledged the issues with its instant messaging service and has started restoring WhatsApp for some users and has promised to fix the issue soon for all users.
Why IT ministry has asked for Meta’s report
MeitY has reportedly asked Meta India to issue a report that includes all the details about the recent two-hour-long WhatsApp outage. The IT Ministry is also tracking if any kind of cyber attack on Meta might have caused the outage.

The company is expected to report to the Cyber Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) if a cyber attack is involved in this WhatsApp outage. The country’s cyber watchdog, CERT-In is also under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Meta’s reaction to the issue
Besides India, WhatsApp users all over the world reported issues with the instant messaging platform. Meta has issued a statement acknowledging the troubles faced by some users while sending messages on WhatsApp. The social media giant has also promised that it is working to restore the instant messaging platform for everyone as soon as possible.

Last year, on October 5, Meta suffered one such outage where its platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp were down for six hours.
