Reliance Retail‘s JioMart has reportedly quietly shut down its JioMart Express service. JioMart Express is the company’s quick commerce grocery delivery service that launched in March 2021.
According to an exclusive report in Economic Times (ET), users can no longer download the JioMart Express app from the Google Play Store, and the company’s website too is inactive. JioExpress website is directing users to Jio.com website. Also, the app is directing users to try JioMart on WhatsApp where deliveries are taking at least a few hours or even a day as opposed to JioMart Express, which was a 90-minute delivery service. JioMart Express had so far launched in Navi Mumbai. The company had initially said that it plans to take it to around 200 cities.
Essentially, as the report says, this means that the quick service delivery from Reliance is no longer available on JioMart. The JioMart orders through WhatsApp is part of a broader partnership between Meta Inc and Reliance’s Jio Platforms announced in 2020.
Official confirmation
A spokesperson for Reliance Retail too confirmed the shutting down of JioExpress to the publication. The spokesperson said that JioMart Express was only a pilot with select users.
“Reliance Retail’s digital commerce in grocery continues to be multifaceted. A high-reach new commerce model with kirana stores, JioMart is currently present in over 350 towns, JioMart on WhatsApp and MilkBasket subscription services in over 35 towns are all initiatives that are being expanded to cater to the diverse consumer requirements. Together, these present an unmatched and a multi-segment play in the digital shopping opportunity,” the company said in a statement.
Reliance Retail also is the single largest investor in quick commerce startup Dunzo. There are reports that JioMart plans to utilise Dunzo’s delivery fleet for Express.
Tough place to be in
Incidentally, all quick commerce companies are struggling to make profit right now. Ecommerce giants Flipkart and Amazon too have largely stayed away from quick deliveries.
In October last year, responding to concerns of deep discounting online, Reliance Retail had said that it is not going to burn cash into predatory online pricing to drive traffic and sales for its e-commerce platform JioMart which is being turned into a marketplace. The company added that it wants to make the platform profitable for almost every single transaction.
