Karnataka IT minister to techies: Moonlighters should leave the state – Times of India
Karnataka IT minister CN Ashwath Narayan has a message for techies. Putting his weight behind Indian IT giants Infosys, TCS, Wipro and others who are opposing moonlighting, he said that those who moonlight should leave the state. Narayan said that paid freelancing beyond office hours is “literally cheating” and professionals wanting to do so should shift out of the state.
Speaking to Times of India, Narayan said, “As a policy and ethically, how can moonlighting be allowed? It is not fair in any way to moonlight. That’s not the way forward… It is literally cheating.” He went on to ask sarcastically, “How can you perform? Is he a superman or what? Does he not have a family?” When asked if the companies have raised the matter with the state government, he said, “When they have the power, why should they come to us? They are dealing with it in their own ways.”
In the past few months, Wipro has sacked 300 employees for moonlighting. Wipro CEO Rishad Premji was the first to term moonlighting cheating and unacceptable.
Infosys CEO Salil Parekh recently said that the company did not support dual employment, reiterating the company’s stance on the practice of employees moonlighting. Parikh said that over the last one year, the company has let go its employees found working with other companies. “If we have found employees doing work in two different companies, where there are confidentiality issues, we have let them go in the last 12 months,” Parekh said. He, however, did not share the number of employees who were asked to leave.
Indian IT major TCS too has come out openly against moonlighting. TCS global HR head Milind Lakkad said that moonlighting is against the company’s core values. “Moonlighting we believe is an ethical issue and it is against our core values and culture,” Lakkad said. He added that TCS has a long-term commitment towards its employees and the employees also have a “reciprocal commitment” towards the company.” Lakkad made this statement during the company’s recent earnings call.
