Leaker says all Galaxy S22 models will have glass backs

TL;DR

  • The base Samsung Galaxy S22 will have a glass back, according to a leaker.
  • This claim comes after the vanilla S21 was the only S21 model to have a plastic back.

One of the more controversial tweaks for Samsung in recent years was the introduction of a “glasstic” back on some flagship phones, being plastic that’s meant to feel like glass. On the one hand, the material should survive a drop better than glass. But on the other hand, it’s clearly a cost-cutting measure and some people feel that glass is simply a more premium material to use.

Now, frequent tipster Ice Universe has claimed on Twitter that all three Galaxy S22 series phones will indeed be using glass backs. You can view a screenshot of the tweet below.

You should take this with a pinch of salt, as the tipster doesn’t have a spotless record. If confirmed though, it would mean that the base Galaxy S22 will be using the same material as the rest of the S22 series lineup. By comparison, this year’s S21 Plus and S21 Ultra both used glass backs while the base S21 used plastic.

This would be welcome news for people who lamented the base S21’s switch to a cheaper plastic finish. But I do have to admit that, after using the Galaxy S20 FE, I quite like Samsung’s take on plastic backs. Sure, it might be a cost-cutting measure, but it shouldn’t spiderweb like glass if dropped.
