LG Display showcases exciting OLED concepts at CES 2022

TL;DR

  • LG Display announced some new innovations at CES 2022.
  • The biggest news relates to transparent displays and how they could work in real-world scenarios.
  • LG also has more traditional announcements, such as consumer TVs.

We’ve already seen a little from LG Display pre-CES 2022. However, the company has now unveiled a bunch more concept products that make use of its cutting-edge OLED display technology.

In addition to its recent Media Chair and Virtual Ride concepts based on flexible OLED, LG Display’s latest concepts use transparent OLED to create new use cases. For example, the company envisions the technology used in shopping installations and store windows. Combined with graphics showcasing advertisements, discounts, festive decoration, and more, the idea fuses display technology and futuristic augmented reality ideas. In fact, you’ll already find similar transparent OLED deployed in South Korean malls and subways in China and Japan.

A slightly more out-there concept is LG Display’s minimalist OLED Shelf. It’s part TV, part shelf, part decorative installation. Combining two 55-inch transparent OLED screens, it works as a TV but can also showcase photos or other decorative elements — such as a digital fish tank — when not in use. If you’re into maximizing the space in your home, this could be a really neat idea.

Flexible and transparent OLED is already driving new and exciting product ranges, including foldable smartphones. However, LG Display is simply showing off some of the possibilities here; it’s still up to partner manufactures to bring ideas like these to the mass market.

Of course, these aren’t the only new technological innovations LG Display has up its sleeve. The company also unveiled its next-generation OLED TV technology, dubbed OLED EX, at CES 2022. You can read more about that at the link below.
