LG has reportedly started to develop OLED panels for the 12.9-inch Apple iPad model. According to a report on The Elec, Apple is preparing to launch two new iPad models with a low power LTPO OLED display in 2023 or 2024 and LG is developing a panel for that device. The report further says that Samsung is also expected to make OLED panels for the Apple device after the deal for 10.8-inch iPad Air went sour.
Most of the OLED panels use a single slack structure where red, green and blue form one emission layer. Apple reportedly demanded two stack tandem structures for the iPad OLED panel as it stacks two red, green and blue emission layers which doubles the brightness and extends the life of the panel by up to four times. Samsung was concerned about the cost of the back-end module process as it only makes single slack panels on the other hand LG applies two stack tandem structures to its OLED panels but the company has a relatively small production capacity.
LG is reportedly planning to use LTPO TFT technology to make the panel, Apple first demanded for the same from Samsung. The panels are expected to use the same Gen 6 substrates used in the iPhone 13 Pro models which may allow the devices to boast a much wider range of refresh rates.
As per various reports, Apple has abandoned plans to launch the OLED iPad Air in 2022. The company was planning to have low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology in the device that is expected to arrive in 2023 or later. The iPad Pro now appears to be Apple’s focus when it comes to its range of tablets with OLED displays.
