LG shows off a smartphone telephoto camera module with true zoom – Times of India

Even though LG said goodbye to the smartphone market, it still makes components for smartphones and has built a new camera module for smartphones – a telephoto one with true zoom. The periscope-style telephoto camera module offers a 4-9 times zoom range, allowing smartphones to capture zoomed-in shots without compromising on the details while reducing the size of the bump and moving parts within the module.
The current telephoto cameras are fixed zoom modules that allow zooming in only at a specific magnification level, while at other levels, it uses digital zoom.
LG’s telephoto sensor for smartphone mimics DSLR’s telephoto lens
However, LG Innotek has been said to have developed a zoom actuator component for moving lenses within all the sections between the allowed range, similar to how zoom lenses work in DSLR or mirrorless cameras. This will let the sensor change the focal lens more accurately, having a clear focus. The sensor has OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) incorporated, reducing the blur because of shaking while also improving the definition.
The company says that it has reduced the number of moving components. So being a slimmer module, LG’s telephoto module will not create as big a bump as other telephoto cameras.
Samsung had developed a similar camera module in the past, known as a “folded” lens, which offered four times zoom. The module was first used in the Galaxy S20 Ultra.
Meanwhile, Sony Xperia 1 IV has also used a previous version of LG’s zoom lens.
LG Innotek says that it has collaborated with Qualcomm to fine-tune the software for continuous optical zoom, which will enhance the auto-focus, exposure, white balance, and lens shading correction among other improvements.
