LG unveils world’s first high-resolution stretchable display: All details here
LG stretchable display technology
In a blog post, LG Display says that microLEDs with a pixel pitch of less than 40μm have made it possible for the display to have stretchable characteristics. The full RGB colour prototype display has 20% stretchability and 100ppi resolution. The South Korean company says that the newly-unveiled display is the industry’s first to achieve 20% stretchability.
The display is based on a highly-resilient film-type substrate that is made of special silicon used in contact lenses. This special silicon substrate provides a rubber band-like flexibility and its free-form nature “surpasses the existing foldable and rollable technology.”
As per LG, the stretchable display has a flexible S-form spring wired system’s optimal structure instead of the conventional linear wired system. This system enables the display to endure repetitive changes to its form offering durability and reliability. Furthermore, LG claims that the display can “withstand significant external impacts” and the display’s resolution competes with most existing monitors.
Where LG stretchable display can be used
The stretchable display’s high flexibility, durability and reliability allows it to have the potential for commercialisation. It’s thin, lightweight design offers versatility for various daily scenarios, as per LG Display. The company says that the display can be easily attached to curved surfaces such as skin, clothing, furniture, automobiles and aircraft.
“We will successfully complete this project to enhance the competitiveness of Korean display technology while continuing to lead the industry’s paradigm shift,” Soo-young Yoon, Executive Vice President and CTO at LG Display, said in a statement.
The display can also lead to innovation in areas like the fashion industry, wearables, mobility and gaming.
