LG Display has just revealed a special new 12-inch display it has been working on. The new display has earned the title of the world’s first 12-inch high-resolution stretchable display.
In a blog post, LG unveiled a new stretchable display that is highly durable and can reportedly compete with most existing monitors. LG claims that its stretchable or “free form” display has achieved an industry-first 20% stretchability with a resolution of 100ppi, and full-color RGB. The display is said to use micro-LEDs with a pixel pitch of less than 40μm and is capable of stretching from 12-inches to 14-inches.
With gadgets like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4, we’ve seen our fair share of flexible screens. But LG’s display takes screen malleability to the next level. Where flexible screens can be folded, this screen can be “extended, folded, and twisted without distortion or damage.”
Described as highly resilient, rubber band-like, thin, and lightweight, LG believes there is a lot of commercial potential in its display. Given its versatility, LG points out that the display can be attached easily to curved surfaces. Some examples it provided were skin, clothing, furniture, automobiles, and aircraft.
It appears that at the moment, LG has its eyes on fashion, wearables, mobility, and gaming in regards to this technology. Such a display could lead to far more durable phones and other devices in the future. As technology continues to get more expensive, it would be nice to have a screen you don’t have to worry about breaking.
