Made-in-India iPhones: Apple doubles exports to surpass $2.5 billion
iPhone exports from India
Three primary iPhone suppliers who manufacture iPhones in India include — Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron. The report suggests that Foxconn and Wistron have each shipped more than $1 billion of Apple’s smartphones outside India within the first nine months of the fiscal year ending March 2023. Meanwhile, Pegatron, who is also another major contract manufacturer for Apple is on track to export about $500 million worth of the iPhones by the end of January.
How Apple is planning to move production outside China
Apple’s rapidly increasing export numbers indicate how the company is planning to ramp up operations outside of China. Recently, vulnerabilities in the company’s supply chain were exposed as chaos at Foxconn’s main plant in Zhengzhou forced Apple to reduce its output estimates. This issue compounded a bigger problem which resulted in diminishing the demand for electronics as consumers became worried about a global recession.
Apple’s “iPhone-plans” for India
The tech major which is also the world’s most valuable company started assembling its latest iPhone models in India in 2022. This was a major change from Apple’s tradition of reserving a huge chunk of the production for its Chinese factories run by its primary Taiwanese assemblers including Foxconn.
PM Modi is planning to make India an alternative to China as a factory to the world, so the rising exports bode well with the plan. However, it is important to note that India produces only a fraction of the total iPhone output.
