Many of you still have Chrome Lite Mode enabled

Google announced last week that it would be depreciating the data-saving Lite Mode in the Chrome browser for Android late this month. The move comes after Lite Mode was first introduced back in 2014, compressing incoming web content to speed up loading and save data.

We wanted to know how many people have this option enabled on their mobile Chrome browser, posting a poll within our news story last week. Here are the results of that poll.

Just over 900 votes were tallied in our poll to date, and it looks like a slim majority of respondents (52.78%) say it’s enabled on their phone’s Chrome browser. One reader comment noted that they found Lite Mode handy as they were using Google Fi’s flexible plan (charging $10 per GB up to 6GBs).

Meanwhile, 47.22% of polled readers said they actually had Lite Mode disabled on their phone browsers. Reader comments supporting this stance pointed to reasons like plentiful mobile data and websites not working correctly with the mode.

Either way, it’s clear that a significant number of respondents still use Lite Mode today. So we wonder whether Google is a little too trigger-happy in wanting to get rid of the service in the coming days. The company says that it offers plenty of other data-saving measures in Chrome for Android already, but the mode could still be handy for those with limited data plans or people in areas of erratic connectivity.

• Ryengeku: Well, that sucks. I’ve had it enabled since I switched to paying per gig of data on Google Fi.
• lak611: I never even know such a setting existed, but I have the ability to use up to 50 GB data before it gets throttled, so it doesn’t matter to me.
• ziogref: I disable it because it bypasses my pihole. Also I have 80gb a month to burn, which I use like 20gb
• Shizuma: I used to use it back in the day, but stopped a long time ago because it simply caused too many issues with websites not working properly.
