Last month, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) released the finalized version of Matter 1.0. We’re now starting to see the new smart home interoperability standard bear fruit as we begin to see devices that will work with Matter.
Today, the CSA held an official Matter launch event in Amsterdam. At the event, the organization explained how your smart home will work in the future and what features are coming next to Matter, according to Android Police. It also announced that 190 certifications are in progress or have finished for new products.
This standard will encompass a large variety of smart home gadgets. This includes smart lighting, smart blinds, smart plugs, smart thermostats, and many more.
Developed in collaboration with Samsung, Amazon, Google, Apple, and many other smart home companies, Matter aims to fix interoperability between smart home devices. As the CSA explains in its video below, buying smart home items should be as easy as buying any other item for the home. Essentially, it’s an effort to make it easier for consumers to build out their smart home and convince skeptics to finally jump on board.
When you look at it from a macro level, 190 products among the countless devices currently on the market doesn’t sound like much. But this is the early days of a standard that already has the backing of 280 companies across the industry.
At the event, a number of companies announced new products with Matter support. According to Android Police, some of the biggest announcements included:
- Amazon — Amazon is bringing Matter over Wi-Fi support for 17 Echo devices and Amazon plugs, switches, and bulbs.
- Philips — Philip’s Hue Bridge smart lighting system is now Matter certified.
- Aqara — The company is bringing Matter support to its Zigbee smart home hubs in December.
- Nanoleaf — Nanoleaf showed off four new Matter-compatible smart bulbs and lightstrips.
