MediaTek announces new Dimensity 1080 chipset: Key specs and features

MediaTek has launched a new chipset for budget smartphones. The new processor will succeed the Dimensity 920 chipset which powers smartphones such as Realme Narzo 50 Pro and Xiaomi 11i. The Taiwan-based chipmaker has said that the 5G smartphones powered by the latest octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset will arrive later in the fourth quarter of 2022 (Q4 2022). The company claims that the Dimensity 1080 offers improved performance and camera features compared to its predecessor. However, MediaTek has not shared any comparison data to distinguish both mobile platforms.

The new Dimensity 1080 5G mobile platform is equipped with an upgraded octa-core CPU and is based on the 6nm architecture. This new chipset supports two Arm Cortex-A78 CPU cores that can be overclocked up to 2.6GHz paired with an Arm Mali-G68 graphics unit.

MediaTek’s latest 5G Dimensity processor claims to support a 200MP main camera and is equipped with the company’s proprietary image signal processor (ISP) called Imagiq. Apart from this, the latest chipset will also support a hardware-based HDR video recording engine that can process videos with up to 4K resolution.
For gaming enhancements, the new chipset combines HyperEngine 3.0 with its built-in AI processing unit 3.0 (APU 3.0). Moreover, the Dimesnity 1080 processor also supports Wi-Fi 76 connectivity and sub-6GHz 5G networks.

As per CH Chen, Deputy General Manager of the Wireless Communications Business unit at MediaTek, the new chipset aims to further improve the functions offered by its predecessor. He also mentioned that not only will the new processor offer enhanced processing power, camera and video quality but it will also reach the manufacturers in the stipulated time.
