Meta pulls the plug on Portal and two unreleased smartwatches – Times of India

Meta has been going through a tough time. First, the company laid off over 11,000 employees across teams and froze hiring until the first quarter of next year. Now, the company has reportedly put an end to its hardware projects, including Portal and two yet-to-be-released smartwatches.
Earlier this year, Meta winded up the production of Portal devices, taking the lineup of smart displays off the market. Though the devices and services were still operational for the enterprises, Meta will not be selling Portal to businesses from now on.
A little ago, we learned that Meta has been working on a smartwatch, possibly two of them. While one of the smartwatches was killed earlier in development last year due to blaming “cost-cutting,” the other has also met the same fate.
The smartwatch – one with two cameras – shelved earlier this year was reportedly at the final stage of development, scheduled to release in 2023. There were reportedly multiple wearable projects going on at Meta.
The news comes from Reuters, citing Meta’s top brass speaking to employees at the town hall meeting after the recent layoffs. The Verge has corroborated the same, which happens to have listened to the same from its own sources.
Teams are undergoing restructuring, and Zuckerberg said that the layoffs would affect the teams disproportionately. 46 per cent of the nearly 11,000 employees sacked were working on the technology, while the rest were tasked with handling the business.
So would we see any hardware from Meta in the future? The company still seems very focused on the metaverse; thus, Quest will not be going anywhere anytime soon. But, yes, we do not expect the company to introduce any new smart displays or smartwatches soon.
