Microsoft confirms that Windows 11 22H2 update is causing decreased copying speeds-and it has a workaround | Digit

Microsoft has confirmed that there is a performance reduction when users copy large files from a remote computer to a computer with Windows 11 22H2 update. The company has said that the issue could also be present when copying files on a local drive. Let’s take a deep dive into what exactly has happened!

Decrease in copying performance: What happened

After the recent Windows 11 22H2 update, various users have reported a decrease in system performance, while trying to copy files within Windows. Ned Pyle, Manager of the Windows Server engineering group also confirmed that the issue is present and said that the experience might vary for different users.

Microsoft said in an update log that “Copying large multiple gigabyte (GB) files might take longer than expected to finish on Windows 11, version 22H2. You are more likely to experience this issue copying files to Windows 11, version 22H2 from a network share via Server Message Block (SMB) but local file copy might also be affected. Windows devices used by consumers in their homes or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.”

Decrease in copying performance: What you need to do

While there is no official solution for the problem, Microsoft says that they are working on a fix and it would be available in the next update. However, in case you’re facing this issue with your system, then you could perhaps try using a temporary workaround recommended by Microsoft.

The company has said that till the issue gets fixed, users can use file copy tools that do not use cache manager (buffered I/O). In simple words, users can use the robocopy and xcopy tools which are built-in command-line tools. Both commands have been listed below. :

  • robocopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder somefile.img /J
  • xcopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder/J
