  • Microsoft is holding a private briefing with the press about its ChatGPT-enhanced Edge browser and Bing search engine.
  • Its overhauled browser replaces certain critical aspects with AI tools.
  • The new version of Edge and Bing is available to try right now.

The AI wars continue to rage on as Microsoft reveals two new AI products only a day after Google revealed its ChatGPT competitor — Bard. Microsoft believes its new products could reshape the web search and browsing experience.

Earlier today, Microsoft announced a surprise AI event that would be held in person at the company’s Redmond headquarters later in the day. During the private press briefing, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced a revamped version of the company’s Edge browser and Bing search engine.

The browser and search engine that were announced at the event are said to be enhanced by an upgraded version of ChatGPT’s AI technology. According to Digital Trends, Microsoft has replaced certain aspects of the browser with AI tools to optimize it for natural language questions. Microsoft reportedly describes the integration as “your AI copilot for the web.”

The tech giant claims that about half of all searches aren’t solved by traditional results, especially when the question is complex with multiple components. But the company believes Bing’s new “Prometheus Model” — powered by OpenAI’s technology — can deliver the results users are looking for through relevant results and annotated answers.

The event wasn’t all talk either, as Microsoft live demoed Bing’s new feature in front of the crowd. In one example, the company showed Bing displaying traditional search results for recipes with annotations and an AI chat interface off to the side. The tool can reportedly gather information from search results and throw them together in a list.

The AI chat interface can also reportedly help users dive even further into questions. For example, if you searched for the best headphones, you could take it further by asking specifically for the best noise-cancelling headphones.

As for the new Edge browser, Microsoft redesigned it to look more in line with Windows 11. In addition to the new look, the sidebar in Bing is available across the browser. This sidebar can reportedly write a summary, link documents, and compare data between multiple pages.

The final surprise Microsoft had up its sleeve was the reveal that the new Edge browser and Bing are available to try right now. If you want to check it out, you just have to go to bing.com/new. It’s a limited-time preview, however, and you’ll have to sign up on the waitlist to get your chance.
