microsoft: This is Microsoft’s answer to Google ChromeOS – Times of India

Google’s ChromeOS is a handy alternative for those who don’t want to use Windows or Mac devices. Chrome OS-powered laptops have become popular for online education and now it seems like Microsoft’s want a piece of that pie as well. Microsoft has announced Windows 11 SE, which will be a direct competitor to ChromeOS.
Further, in a blog post, Microsoft made it clear that it is looking at targeting the education sector. “We have heard from educators that they need options that are simpler, secure and work on more affordable devices,” says Paige Johnson, vice president of Education Marketing, in a blog post.
Johnson further said that “This expanded portfolio complements our current Windows 11 devices for learning, providing even more choices for schools to have the tools, insights and controls they need to deliver optimal learning experiences, at a price that broadens access to Microsoft performance, security and reliability.”
Microsoft said that Windows 11 SE was designed and built during the pandemic to address the most fundamental challenges that schools will face in the blended learning world. It brings performance enhancements that optimise resources on low-cost devices to deliver more comprehensive learning experiences and is simple to deploy and manage, claimed Microsoft in a blog post.
What laptops will run Windows 11 SE?
The US-based tech giant said that Windows 11 devices from the likes of Acer, HP, Asus, Dell, Lenovo and others will come soon. These devices will be powered by Intel and AMD processors and will be priced at entry-level, starting at $249. Chromebooks — entry-level models — in India are generally priced under Rs 30,000.
Microsoft has also announced a new Surface Laptop SE, which is its most affordable laptop and is designed keeping in mind the needs of students.
When will Windows 11 SE be made available?
Microsoft has said that it expects a majority of devices to be available later this year and into 2022. It’s not clear what markets the laptops will be available in.
