Microsoft Xbox cloud streaming device could launch by Summer 2023: Report | Digit
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer had announced the Xbox streaming stick about one and half years ago.
Microsoft is reportedly taking steps to expand its cloud gaming efforts by launching a streaming device, by the summer of 2023. This could be specifically meant to stream games, along with other services, directly to the users’ TVs.
Microsoft’s cloud-gaming streaming device could be similar to an Amazon Fire TV Stick or a smaller version, like Roku’s puck. The device will allow the streaming of movies and TV services in addition to a library of games through the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The library of playable titles without dedicated hardware will be the key selling point of the upcoming device.
Microsoft is also working closely with its partners at Samsung, reports Venturebeat, to develop a game-streaming app for the users with a Samsung Smart TV. It will reportedly help them to bypass the new device completely. The app is also set to debut within the next 12 months.
Xbox Everywhere Initiative wants to expand access to game streaming from the cloud, integrating them into the Xbox ecosystem. Fortnite was added to the list of cloud gaming titles, making it available to iOS devices, despite the game’s removal from App Store owing to its ongoing legal dispute with developer Epic Games.
Although Microsoft has realised that hardware (dedicated Xbox consoles) remains the best way to reach the Game Pass subscribers, the upcoming device will appeal to a huge audience that is not ready to make an investment in expensive consoles but wants to try and stream free games like Halo Infinite and Fortnite.
Once the Redmond-based company finds a way around the chip crunch, the streaming device should be back on the floor.
