Microsoft’s next Surface Duo may look like Galaxy Z Fold – Times of India

Microsoft was among the first manufacturers to bring a folding phone, only a few days after Samsung announced its Galaxy Z Fold 4 in 2020. However, unlike Galaxy Z Fold and several other folding smartphones with a literal folding display, Microsoft took a different approach with the Surface Duo, putting two screens together through a hinge. The dual-screen design continued for two generations, but the next Surface Duo may look more similar to Galaxy Z Fold than ever before.
As per the latest report from Windows Central, citing sources familiar with the development, the next folding phone of Microsoft, the Surface Duo 3, will not be a dual-screen phone. Instead, it will have an internal folding display with an external cover display and a 180-degree hinge, similar to Galaxy Z Fold, Vivo X Fold, and other mainstream foldables.
Surface Duo 3 with dual-screens stands cancelled
The report says that after nearly a year of experimentation and prototyping, Microsoft decided upon the dual-screen design for Surface Duo 3, which would have come with taller edge-to-edge displays, and wireless charging.
However, the project has been shelved, and the team is starting from scratch on the new “true” foldable Surface Duo 3. Though this would not be the first time Microsoft has thought of delivering a true foldable Duo, the report adds that the company has been exploring the foldable display option since 2021.
That is all we know of the alleged ‘new’ Surface Duo 3. There is no word on what Microsoft’s next foldable would offer, either the hardware or software.
With a change in the design, Microsoft could abandon the ‘Duo’ branding for something that coincides more with the foldable form factor.
The report suggests that the development team is putting considerable effort into software to differentiate the coming Surface Duo from the rest of Android foldable. Microsoft is reportedly working on delivering an “ecosystem experience” among its Android phones and Windows PCs, as it is on iPhones and Macs.
Microsoft could soon enter the ‘mainstream’ phones segment
Windows Central reports that Microsoft wants to expand its lineup of Android smartphones, and it has been experimenting with different form factors. The company has readied prototypes for several traditional smartphone designs that may exist alongside the foldable smartphone, making it an enthusiast’s product. However, nothing has been confirmed until now.
The Surface Duo 3 was expected to release later this year in the fall. But now, with the pivot, there is no word on when the next Duo will arrive. We may not see a new Surface Duo from Microsoft for the second year in a row.
