Mission Impossible? No, as Tom Cruise may become the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside the ISS – Times of India

Tom Cruise is going to space to shoot for his next film and a stunt requires him to hang off a space station (for which the International Space Station will be availed of) as it orbits the Earth at an altitude of 254 miles (408 kilometres), as per a report by Gizmodo, based on inputs from a BBC interview of Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.
The Mission Impossible and Top Gun Maverick star may also become the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside the ISS. Universal reportedly has the film rights and the film is currently in development.
“The film will shoot on board the ISS, and Cruise is supposed to board a rocket and head towards low Earth orbit for his role as a man tasked with saving Earth”, said the report.
Langley reportedly said during the interview that Cruise will be “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”
Doug Liman, the director of the film, and Tom Cruise, had pitched the idea of the film to Langley in 2020. At that time, a report by Hackaday had suggested that the Top Gun star would be flying to the International Space Station (ISS) in October 2021 aboard a SpaceX spaceship helmed by NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria alongwith director Doug Liman. The report quoted NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine as saying that he was inspired by Top Gun to become a Navy Pilot. Bridenstine reportedly said that if Top Gun could inspire kids back then, why couldn’t Tom Cruise on the ISS inspire the next Elon Musk? It was also rumoured that Cruise was working with Elon Musk’s SpaceX on the film project.
