NBA coach green bubble shamed Android-using player, punished team

TL;DR

  • NBA coach Jason Kidd once green bubble shamed a Milwaukee Bucks player.
  • Not only did he chastise the player for using an Android phone, but he made the whole team do runs in response.
  • Kidd felt that one player not using an iPhone made the team less united.

I’ve written a few times about the iPhone vs Android debate and how I feel it has run its course. I’ve also written about so-called “green bubble shaming,” which is when iPhone users denounce or even reject friends who use Android devices in iMessage chats.

I’d love to say that we’ve reached a point where this kind of thing isn’t a problem anymore, but stories just keep popping up that remind me we are far from done. As an example, the world of pro basketball has an interesting story related to Android hate (via Phone Arena).

NBA coach Jason Kid is with the Dallas Mavericks right now, but he used to lead the Milwaukee Bucks. According to an excerpt from a new non-fiction book on the NBA, Kidd once green bubble shamed a player on the Bucks. Allegedly, Kidd was upset that Bucks player Thon Maker used an Android device. His presence within the team’s iMessage group chat turned the chat green, and Kidd felt it hurt team morale.

Here’s the excerpt:

At one point center Thon Maker didn’t have an iPhone, messing up the team’s blue-bubble iPhone group chat. Kidd was upset about it and made the team run because Kidd felt that Maker not getting an iPhone was an example of the team not being united.

It appears that not only was Kidd upset with Maker, but he punished the whole team in response. I’m not sure how insulting a teammate’s phone choice promotes unity on a team, but hey, I don’t coach in the NBA.
