Netflix puts an end to password sharing in these four countries – Times of India
Netflix’s long-awaited plan to end password sharing is now set in motion. Amid a fall in paying customers, Netflix wants to make freeloaders pay for the subscription, starting with Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain.
The streaming giant says that customers in these regions – Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain – beginning today, will be asked to set a ‘primary location‘ to ensure that those in the same household can only use the account. Also, there is a new ‘Manage Access and Devices‘ page for the account owner to manage members who have access to the account.
The ‘household’ rules
Netflix says that members will still be able to use their account or log into a new account if they are travelling or someplace else.
But there might be a catch. A few days ago, we learned that the account owner would need to authorise the login. Apart from this, members would need to connect to the household network every 30 days, or they might lose their account.
However, none of the support pages now have any mention of these rules, except that the account is meant to be shared in one household.
Netflix received backlash over its plans to curb password sharing. The streaming giant later discarded it, saying that the sharing rules were posted in error. But we are back at it.
“Today, over 100 million households are sharing accounts — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films,” said Chengyi Long, Director, Product Innovation at Netflix.
Analysts at Cowen estimate that Netflix is losing an additional $721 million in revenue for the 30 million users in US and Canada if they stop sharing passwords.
Buy an extra member or transfer profile
Over the last year, Netflix has been testing the option to buy an extra member and transfer a profile in case someone buys a new account. Now, these two options — “Buy an extra member” and “Transfer profile” to these four regions starting today.
People subscribed to the Standard and Premium plans can now add members to their accounts for extra money over what they are paying for their subscription. If you are subscribed to the Standard plan, you can have one extra member and two if you are on the Premium tier.
If you do not want to add an extra member, you can simply transfer the profile to a new account with personal recommendations, viewing history and more.
Well, Netflix is not stopping at these four regions. These changes will be rolled out widely in the coming months.
