TL;DR

  • Netflix is testing an “add a home” feature for paid password and account sharing.
  • It will charge members $2.99 to add an extra streaming home to their accounts.
  • Members can use their accounts in additional homes without paying extra for two weeks.

Back in April, Netflix made it clear it wants to make password and account sharing a paid practice. Now, the streaming platform has an update on how it plans to implement paid sharing.

In March, Netflix tested a feature called “add an extra member” in select countries. It charged members extra to add sub-accounts for people they don’t live with. The service is now experimenting with an alternative “add a home” feature in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Each Netflix account will include one home where folks are allowed to stream content. To watch Netflix in additional homes, users will have to pay an extra $2.99/month if they use an account for more than two weeks outside their primary residence.

Members on Netflix’s Basic plan will be able to add one extra home, Standard up to two extra, and Premium up to three extra.

LOCATION MODEL ANIM ENGLISH

The service will make an exception for when you are traveling. Users can use the service outside their homes on their tablets, laptops, or mobiles.

Members in countries where the new “add a home” feature is going live will be informed via email and on Netflix.

“Today’s widespread account sharing between households undermines our long-term ability to invest in and improve our service,” Netflix wrote in a press release.

With the service trying out different methods of paid password and account sharing, it won’t be long before Netflix subscribers are affected worldwide. The platform is also testing cheaper ad-supported plans in a bid to increase revenues.
