New iPhone 14 Pro gets a clever new notch and power Android can only dream of
After months of rumours and endless speculation, Apple has finally lifted the lid on its new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices and this is another big upgrade to the firm’s most premium smartphones. These flagship gadgets now get a completely redesigned and fully interactive notch that changes throughout the day. It’s something Apple is calling Dynamic Island and it’s certainly unique.
When a call comes through the little black bar on the screen expands to let you answer it. There’s also animations for things such as timers and music playback. It’s a neat update and might finally end the criticism of that hugely controversial notch design.
The Pro and Pro Max also join the iPhone 14 with the introduction of clever satellite technology which means no matter where you are in the world you should always be able to stay in touch. For anyone stuck up a mountain and in need of help this could be life-saving bonus.
Along with that space-aged update, Apple is finally bringing a much-loved Android feature to the Pro versions of its new iPhone with these devices getting an always-on display. However, thanks to impressive screen technology, the Pro takes things up a notch with the homecreen dimming so users still see everything that’s going on on their phones.
Always-on displays have long been found on rival devices from Samsung, Sony and Google and it’s nice to see Apple finally joining the party.
Tucked under the tough glass and aluminium shell is the firm’s latest and greatest A16 Bionic processor which Apple says offers huge performance gains over the previous A15 brains. That 2021 chip wasn’t exactly slow but things have been taken to a new level with the Pro phones now 40% faster than its rivals.
Of course, this is a Pro device so it gets a very impressive camera with users treated to a triple-lens snapper that, for the first time ever, features a new 48MP Main camera with a quad-pixel sensor that adapts to the photo being captured. This should mean that every shot taken on the phone looks like it’s been shot by a pro.
Other extras coming to the iPhone Pro include longer battery life, new colours and a screen that gets thinner bezels and is now even brighter with this panel able to be pushed up to 2000nits which is twice as bright as iPhone 13 Pro.
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be available in deep purple, silver, gold, and space black in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities.
Sadly, all that technology doesn’t come cheap with Apple wanting at least £1,099 for its entry-level Pro model.
“Our customers count on their iPhone every day, and with iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, we’re delivering more advancements than any other iPhone. iPhone 14 Pro introduces a camera system that empowers every user — from the casual user to the professional — to take their best photos and video, and innovative new technologies like the Always-On display and the Dynamic Island, which offers new interactions for notifications and activities,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
“Groundbreaking safety capabilities bring users even more security, offering help when they need it most. And with the incredibly powerful and efficient A16 Bionic chip and all-day battery life, this is the best iPhone yet.”
