nokia flagship phone: Why you may not get OnePlus 9 series or iPhone rival from Nokia any time soon – Times of India

HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, has confirmed that it will not bring any flagship Nokia device, at least for now. In an interview with Android Authority, Adam Ferguson, HMD’s Global Head of Product Marketing said that launching a flagship Nokia phone does not make sense for the company right now. “Making an $800 phone doesn’t make sense for us at the moment,” he said.
HMD said that it will focus on its core business for now that includes entry-level and mid-range smartphones along with feature phones.
At the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC) event, tech companies from across the globe showcased their flagship devices. We saw big announcements from Realme, Samsung and OnePlus to name a few. But Nokia was missing from the list of top devices. Not that the HMD Global-owned company was completely absent from the event, but the phones that Nokia unveiled at the event were mainly entry-level phones.
Nokia has tried everything to stay relevant in the mobile segment. It has strengthened its presence in the feature phone segment. It has also been innovating with high-end phones, offers faster updates and cleaner Android One experience. Nokia 9 PureView that was launched in 2019 was a bold attempt by the company to revive its name in premium camera phones category. The handset features a penta-lens camera setup at the back. Unfortunately, the device was not received well. There have been numerous rumours of Nokia bringing the phone’s sequel, but no Nokia flagship has come since then.
So what lies next for Nokia? HMD Global, as we mentioned above, aims to focus on feature phones along with low-end and mid-range phones. It says that it wants to be the market leader for prepaid smartphones in the US and is also planning to split services into separate divisions, e.g. IoT data roaming and SIM management.
