Nothing OS 1.5 open beta brings Android 13 to Phone (1) – Times of India

Nothing Phone (1) is finally receiving the Android 13 with the Nothing OS 1.5 update, but it comes for those who registered for the open beta testing. The beta build of Android 13-based Nothing OS 1.5 comes with a new Weather app, underlying Android 13 changes, including per-app language preferences, clipboard preview, photo picker, and changes to UI.
Nothing OS 1.5 optimises system performance of Phone (1)
The first beta build bumps the app loading speed by up to 50 percent. The background memory has been increased, thus reducing the load time for frequently used apps. Users will now be able to close active background apps directly from the notification center, which is a feature of Android 13. The Nothing OS 1.5 beta adds a “self-repair” feature that clears the unused cache and expired system dumps, keeping the Phone (1) running like it’s new.
These Android 13 features come to Nothing Phone (1)
The Nothing OS 1.5, which is built on top of Android 13, borrows its expanded color scheme matching the wallpaper. Other Android 13 features to have come are a photo picker, granular media, notification control, a new QR code scanner within the notification panel, per app language preferences, and clipboard preview.
There is also a new Weather app that has been custom developed by Nothing. The media control and volume control have a new UI. And Live Captions have also been added. The quick settings now have a new network and Bluetooth pop-ups.
The Game Mode has also received some improvements, with a new UI for light notifications and Google game Dashboard integration, bringing screenshots, screen recording support, FPS display, and Do Not Disturb mode.
Nothing OS 1.5 coming early next year, and Nothing OS 2.0 touted to be under development
In a conversation with Android Authority, Nothing CEO Carl Pei disclosed that the Nothing Phone (1) launched with the Nothing OS developed by an outsourced team, but now the company has replaced the code in the Nothing OS 1.5 with an in-house codebase. Nothing says that users will not notice it since the UI remains the same, but this promises to make the system smoother and more stable.
The stable build of Nothing OS 1.5 is slated to release in early 2023. Pei, in the same interview, also revealed that Nothing OS 2.0 will be based on Android 13, though he did not provide any release date for the same.
