Nothing Phone 1 hands-on shows its secrets

TL;DR

  • YouTuber MKBHD just posted a Nothing Phone 1 hands-on video.
  • The video shows the phone from all angles and focuses mostly on the light-up back.
  • Many aspects of the phone — including specs — are still unconfirmed.

Nothing — the company started by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei — is very close to launching its first-ever smartphone. In Pei’s usual fashion, the company has been slowly doling out info on the phone to build buzz for the full launch on July 12.

Now, thanks to YouTuber MKBHD, we have our first Nothing Phone 1 hands-on. In the video, MKBHD focuses mostly on the design of the phone — specifically the “glyph” interface on the back. This is the light-up back of the phone which has a strange design that coincides with the various hardware inside.

MKBHD goes over how users can control the way the back lights up. You can sync notifications with the lights and use various programmable “light shows” that coincide with that ringtone.

We also, for the first time, get to see the front of the phone. It has a left-aligned display cutout for the selfie camera. The display is flat and has a pretty significant bezel all around. The bezel is symmetrical, however, which is a nice design touch.

Unfortunately, the Nothing Phone 1 hands-on video does not go over the details we want to know the most. That includes specs, camera hardware information, included apps, etc. MKBHD says he is only “allowed” to talk about the light-up back and the basic design of the device.

We will likely have a ton of Nothing Phone 1 details drip out over the next few days as we get ever closer to the device’s full reveal. Stay tuned.
