Now is a good and bad time to buy a new Amazon Kindle ereader

It’s an awkward period for any Amazon Kindle fans thinking of getting a new ereader, as now is both a good – and bad – time to upgrade. The online retail giant has just unveiled its first new entry-level Kindle since 2019, which is launching on October 12 and is priced at £84.99. Pre-orders for this device are available now. However, if you opt for this model over the current entry-level Kindle you’ll be paying £15 more.

The current basic Kindle, which launched in 2019, is priced at £69.99 for the model with ads. This Kindle is – at the time of writing – not in stock on the Amazon UK website but you can purchase it from places such as ASDA.

With the cost of living crisis and rising energy bills, the need to save has never been greater.

And the best thing about entry-level Kindles historically has been the low entry price point, which means you don’t have to pay a fortune to try out an Amazon ereader.

These prices, however, have crept up over time as Amazon adds more and more features – with the 2022 entry-level Kindle now closer in price to the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite which is priced from £129.99.

Amazon fans looking to get a cheap ereader may want to purchase the current entry-level device which can be picked up for under £70.

However, if you’re able to afford it we’d advise you wait a little longer and spend that £15 extra to get the next-gen model.

The specs sheet for the 2022 Kindle have already been revealed and for the extra £15, you will easily get your money’s worth.

One its most eye-catching features is the screen which now features glare-free technology and a resolution of 300 PPI – that’s almost double the quality of the 2019 Kindle and the same clarity as the more expensive Paperwhite which has one of the best displays you can find.

So this upgrade on its own is easily worth the £15 difference between the 2019 and 2022 Kindle’s price tag.

But that’s not all, as the new entry-level Kindle will offer double the storage over the previous model, along with USB-C support at long last.

The storage on the 2022 Kindle is 16GB (as opposed to 8GB previously) while the battery should last a whopping six weeks.

If you care about the environment, then Amazon has also upped its game with the level of sustainability seen on the 2022 Kindle even better than on the Kindle Paperwhite.

The new entry-level Kindle is made from 75 percent post-consumer recycled plastics, while the packaging is entirely made from wood-fibre-based materials from responsibly managed forests or recycled sources. It’s also 100 percent recyclable.
