OnePlus responds to OnePlus 9 performance throttling, says modern chipsets are “overkill” for simple tasks | 91mobiles.com

OnePlus had recently admitted that it throttles the performance of the OnePlus 9 series when using popular 300 apps in Google Play Store. This came after a report from AnandTech that explained in detail how the company has been limiting the performance of the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro flagships in over 300 popular applications, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and others. However, the phones delivered the full potential of the Snapdragon 888 in popular benchmarking applications. This had led to Geekbench removing OnePlus 9 phones from its database. Following multiple reports and speculations that OnePlus is restricting the performance, the company has now come out with a more detailed response about the issue on its forum.

OnePlus says the modern chipsets are overkill for most apps and smartphones and there’s no need for them to run at full power for simple tasks like scrolling on a webpage or social media. For this exact reason, the company throttles performances to improve power consumption and heat dissipation. The company claims that it extensively tests these changes for negative effects. The company’s new statement confirms the existence of a software-defined list of popular applications that it throttles based on varied measurements.

OnePlus is assuring that its testing team makes sure the actual user experience is not negatively affected by these adjustments. Considering the Snapdragon 888 is fast for most actions users perform, CPU doesn’t have to run at full speed says the company. While the explanation sounds logical, after paying a premium for a flagship, users expect the phones to run at their full potential, throttling it may not go well with the expectations set with the promotional activity carried out before and after the launch and this is definitely bad for the company.
