How 150W charging tech will work in smartphones
Oppo says that with the 150W SuperVOOC, a 4500mAh battery can be charged to 50% in just five minutes. A full charge will take about just 15 minutes. If you’re wondering how big a charger would be able to do that then it’s not that huge. In fact, the adapter for 150W leverages gallium nitride (GaN) to reduce the size of the adapter to nearly the same size as the previous generation 65W adapter, measuring 58 x 57 x 30mm, and weighing around 172g.
Furthermore, Oppo says that it has integrated its self-developed BHE within the 150W SuperVOOC flash charge, allowing the battery to maintain 80% of its original capacity after as many as 1,600 charge cycles, which is double the current industry standard. This means that the super-fast charging won’t really damage the battery’s health but in fact, give it more protection.
Battery Health Engine is powered by Oppo’s customised battery management chip and includes two key technologies: Smart Battery Health Algorithm and Battery Healing Technology. Oppo says that by combining the two technologies, it has been able to improve battery health, safety, and performance by optimising the hardware and software.
240W fast charging: Still some time away
Along with the 150W fast charging, Oppo also showcased the 240W SuperVOOC but didn’t clarify when we can expect to see it in smartphones. The 240W SuperVOOC can charge a 4,500mAh battery from 1% to 100% in about 9 minutes. That’s it — 9 minutes is all it will take to fully charge a smartphone. 240W SUPERVOOC is designed with 24V/10A technology on the Type-C interface. It boasts three charge pumps and the power supplied to the handsets can be converted to 10V/24A. It conforms to the existing device specifications and has been tested in terms of heat dissipation, guaranteeing optimal efficiency and enhanced safety, said Oppo. The company also claims that it won’t have any impact on the heat management of the battery. Temperature protection has been enhanced via 13 temperature sensors installed in the phone, reducing the chance of overheating and avoiding abnormalities, claims Oppo.
What other smartphone brands offer in terms of fast charging
Most Android brands boast fast charging in their phones. The likes of OnePlus and Oppo offer 80W charging whereas Xiaomi recently unveiled 120W in the Mi 11T Pro smartphones. Oppo had, in fact, showcased 120W charging tech two years back but didn’t really roll out in its smartphones. The first phone to use this 150W SuperVOOC charging tech will be the OnePlus 10 Pro which is expected to launch in March. When asked about which range of smartphones can we expect to see the tech, Oppo said that it could be in mid-range to flagship ones.
