OPPO finally took wraps off its Reno8 series of smartphones in India. The OPPO Reno 8Pro 5G, the higher-end version of the series, comes with flagship-level specs. The smartphone comes equipped with powerful specs like a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen, MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX chipset, a 50MP camera with 4K Ultra Night Video and 4K Ultra HDR Video shooting, and 80W SuperVOOCTM charging. The device also packs OPPO’s innovative MariSilicon X Imaging NPU. Let’s check out what makes the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G the talk of the town.
All-powerful hardware that handles everything with ease
On the inside, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G packs MediaTek’s flagship-grade Dimensity 8100-MAX, which ensures a powerful all-round performance. MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX is a finetuned version of the Dimensity 8100 chipset that’s optimised to offer superb performance. It’s a 5nm TSMC process-based processor with Mali-G610 MC6 GPU. With an octa-core configuration, the chipset boasts a 12 percent improvement in CPU performance, up to 50 percent better power efficiency, 175 percent boost in AI performance, and up to 29 percent better GPU performance when compared to the previous iteration.
This SoC is paired with up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. The customised MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX is also integrated with enough 5G modems so you won’t miss out on next-gen connectivity. The handset also comes with one of the biggest innovations from OPPO in the form of a proprietary ultra-clear imaging MariSilicon X NPU, which is based on a 6nm process and delivers super-efficient AI computing power at up to 18 Trillion Operations per Second (TOPS), which is even higher than Apple A15 Bionic.
Ultra-conductive cooling system to enable seamless gaming experience
OPPO’s Reno8 Pro 5G has an ultra-conductive cooling system with new advanced cooling materials to prevent heating issues and enhance the overall performance. Compared to the Reno7 Pro, OPPO claims that its latest offering will offer 2.2x more cooling area and a 45 percent improvement in thermal conductivity because of ultra-conductive graphite. This new Graphite is an aircraft-grade, high molecular material passed through intensive processes to increase its conductivity.
So, whether you’re playing games, watching videos, or clicking portraits, you can rest assured that the Reno8 Pro 5G will run smoothly without any heating issues.
With the abovementioned hardware and liquid cooling, OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G offers an enjoyable gaming experience. Add to it the support for MediaTek HyperEngine 5.0 which offers features like AI-enabled variable rate shading, MediaTek Intelligent Display Sync 2.0, optimisations for 5G and Wi-Fi, and gamers will lose the track of time while playing on this handset. This is also the first phone in the Reno series with support for PUBG 90Hz refresh rate mode so that every game action will feel super responsive. It also comes with X-axis Linear Motor support that offers a variety of native vibrations, customized for different scenarios. Furthermore, the device has dual stereo speakers for a more vivid and immersive listening experience while playing games or watching videos.
Cameras that can capture all sorts of scenarios
As mentioned in the introduction, the pull factor of the Reno8 Pro 5G is its camera system. The smartphone offers a triple-camera setup comprising a 50-megapixel IMX766 sensor with f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP 120-degree ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. The primary camera also comes with a super-fast focus in the form of All Pixel Omni-Directional PDAF and DOL-HDR support.
The phone is described as a “Portrait Expert” and promises the best portrait shots even in the most challenging lighting or backlit scenes. It also has a Night Portrait mode, which uses its camera sensors and upgraded Turbo RAW algorithm. Together these can perform three-channel AI noise reduction in the RAW domain, offering super-clear night portraits. Moreover, night portrait videos taken on Reno8 Pro are also quite sharp.
Talking about the videos, thanks to OPPO’s MariSilicon X NPU, the device performs AI noise reduction on 4K 30fps video with more power efficiency. It also offers 4K Ultra-clear Video mode and 4K Ultra HDR Videos with image clarity four times higher than the 1080p videos. Apart from this, there’s 4K Ultra Night Video support, which can shoot impressive night portrait videos.
At the front, the Reno8 Pro 5G gets a 32 MP selfie camera with autofocus in-built and f/2.4 aperture, and 0.8µm pixel size. The Autofocus Smart Selfie feature ensures that just one click of the camera button is needed to click selfies in any situation. In addition, the Sony IMX709 sensor and MariSilicon X NPU ensure that the noise ratio and clarity are improved, while skin tones will appear more natural.
A design that makes its presence felt
Like the previous smartphones in the OPPO Reno series, the Reno8 Pro 5G features a premium design. It has a glass construction with a smooth back finish with a unique camera housing, referred to as the Binocular Camera Module that also features Ring Flash. OPPO has made use of a single piece of glass resulting in a seamless, streamlined unibody design. If you wondering why it has attractive looks that’s because the handset follows the concept of the Golden Ratio from mathematics. The design language follows a 1:.618 proportion for the camera housing at the rear — both horizontally and vertically — resulting in natural attraction. This design also makes sure that dust doesn’t get trapped around the camera area.
If we talk about the phone’s dimensions, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G is just 7.34mm thick. On top of that, it’s light in your hand with just 183g weight too. Apart from this, there are just 2.37mm top and bottom bezels and 1.4mm side bezels, making it the thinnest handset in the Reno series yet.
With this premium glass finish and ultra-thin design, Reno8 Pro 5G comes in two new stunning colours – Glazed Green and Glazed Black.
120Hz AMOLED display that keeps your eyes glued
The OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G features a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen with 950 nits’ peak brightness. It also supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate, which makes sure scrolling through social media, binge-watching shows, or gaming feels much smoother and responsive. Then there’s Gorilla Glass 5 protection to keep the scratches at bay.
Along with HDR10+ support, the display is also Amazon HDR and Netflix HD certified. Moreover, OPPO’s O1 Ultra Engine offers more vivid images while watching YouTube and Instagram. It also has a “Video Image Sharpener” that can upscale video resolution (480p to 1080p) in real-time, by leveraging AI. Apart from this, it is also certified SGS Low Motion Blur & SGS Low Blue Light for better viewing and ensuring that eyes aren’t damaged while using the phone at night.
80W SuperVOOCTM charging to juice up the phone in a jiffy
The smartphone is packed with a 4,500mAh battery. The phone should easily last a day of use, and when you do need to juice it up, the support for 80W SuperVOOCTM charging comes in handy. The bundled 80W fast charger can charge the battery up to 50 percent in 11 minutes and offer 2 hours of gaming with just a 5-mins charge.
Apart from delivering incredible charging speeds, the Reno8 Pro 5G also brings safer and longer-lasting charging cycles and battery life thanks to OPPO’s Battery Health Engine. This intelligently controls the charging current and voltage via real-time monitoring to significantly extend battery life, allowing you to enjoy peak battery performance with up to 4 years of average daily usage.
Intuitive ColorOS 12.1 with a ton of user-friendly features
On the software side, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G comes pre-installed with ColorOS 12.1 on top of Android 12.1. The latest version of ColorOS brings a smarter, more personalized, and more secure operating experience.
The phone comes with a Multi-Screen Connect feature that allows you to multitask simultaneously across different devices. It lets you create up to 3 “cell phone clones” on your PC, and you can open multiple apps.
With Air Gestures, you can control your phone from far away. For example, you can just push your palm towards the screen to play / pause your favorite videos on YouTube or answer/mute calls with a swipe up / down gesture.
For privacy and information security, OPPO complies with the industry standards as it is recognized by authoritative third parties, including ISO and TrustArc.
