Oppo showcases retractable camera prototype at Inno Day event 2021 – Times of India
Oppo hosted its Inno Day 2021 event in China. At the event, the company showcased its retractable rear camera prototype. The company showed a device with a 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor with an f/1.56 aperture. The phone’s thickness was 8.26mm.
The benefit of this new retractable camera is that it allows for more distance between the sensor and the actual lens. The 50mm equivalent module offers 2x optical zoom which allows the phone to capture more detail from the flagship sensor compared to a regular telephoto module. The sensor will also be beneficial for portrait shots that is claimed to offer a more natural look and better subject and hair separation.
Also, the company claims that the technology will offer a superior signal-to-noise ratio from its zoomed shots which is specifically useful in nighttime shots. Oppo says that the new camera technology will be available with its future devices. It, however, does not reveal the name of the device or the actual time frame for when it may happen.
The company claims that the camera module can retract automatically in 0.6 seconds if dropped by a user accidentally. Also, the entire module is splash and dust resistant. Although one downside of the retractable rear camera is that it is useless in its stationary position.
At the event, Oppo also unveiled its Oppo AR Glass. The Assisted Reality wearable comes equipped with the company’s self-developed spark microprojector. It offers four different kinds of user interactions through touch, voice, head movement, and hand motion. Oppo Air Glass will be launched in the first quarter of 2022 in China. It will be available in two colours — Black and White — along with two custom frame accessories.
