Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owners won’t be able to use two calling features for a while

TL;DR

  • Google has confirmed it has temporarily disabled two Pixel 6 calling features.
  • Call Screening and Hold For Me are now unavailable due to an unrevealed bug in the December 2021 Pixel 6 security update.
  • There’s no word on when the bug will be fixed and the features restored.

Some Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners finally got the December 2021 security patch last week. However, some are still waiting, and we can now speculate why Google is delaying the rollout. Google has confirmed that the security update has some bugs that, for some reason, have forced the company to disable two Pixel 6 calling features for an undetermined period of time.

Maybe Google should have kept working on that patch.

According to a post on Google’s support forums, both Hold For Me and Call Screening have been put on pause due to “a bug in the December Android update.” The post adds that the Pixel software team is “actively working on resolving this issue.” Google did not state what the bug was that caused it to disable the calling features, nor did it offer a timetable for when the bug will be fixed.

Call Screening lets Google Assistant answer any calls from numbers that are not part of your normal contacts, so it can screen out the obvious robocalls and spammers. Hold For Me lets you call a business, with Google Duplex taking over if it detects a recorded message or robot until an actual human takes over on the other end.

No one likes it when you are not able to use the full features on your phone. Hopefully, Google will get this bug fixed ASAP. We will update this post when that happens.
