Pixel 7 might be getting a selfie camera upgrade

TL;DR

  • New code found in the Google Camera app suggest the  Pixel 7 might be getting a selfie camera upgrade.
  • It will apparently support 4K video recording as opposed to the vanilla Pixel 6 that lacked the feature.

Information about the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro has been trickling in ever since Google confirmed the phones are launching this fall. Today, 9to5Google found some more tidbits about the selfie shooter on the upcoming phones.

As per strings of code found in the Google Camera app, the front-facing camera on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro should be able to record 4K videos.

This is in contrast to the Pixel 6 series, where only the pro variant can shoot 4K videos from the selfie camera. The baseline Pixel 6 restricts video recording to FHD resolution. It also uses an 8MP selfie camera instead of the Pixel 6 Pro’s 11.1MP sensor.

There’s no confirmation about the selfie sensor on the Pixel 7 series, but 9to5Google reports that there aren’t too many differences in the code for the phones within the Google Camera app. It’s possible Google will use the same 11.1MP camera from last year on both the new Pixels, but we can’t be sure of it.

Meanwhile, the code also revealed some details about the camera on the upcoming Pixel Tablet. Given that the tablet is set to launch in 2023, you should view these findings with some skepticism.

The code shows that the Pixel Tablet will lack 4Kvideo recording support. Multiple other camera features from the Pixel 6 phones might also be missing from the tablet, and understandably so. Google’s tablet is possibly intended for indoor use as a smart home device, so it wouldn’t make sense to equip it with all the fancy Pixel 6 camera features.
