Punjabi University to develop software tools for 16 Indian languages

Punjabi University to enter into a joint venture with IITs and IIITs for developing software tools for 16 Indian languages in three major research projects, worth more than Rs 40 crore. The university is one among premier institutes, including IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Patna and CDAC Noida, which will work on creating the software tools.

University Dean Colleges Prof Gurpreet Singh Lehal said the university was working on Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Sindhi, Balochi, Pashto, Dari, Kashmiri, Dogri, Nepali and other languages.

He said, “This is the first time that any state university is working for the development of software tools for so many languages together under multi-crore research projects. Twenty one full time and 10 part time jobs with salary ranging from Rs 15,000 per month to Rs 1 lakh per month have been created under these projects. Students from Afghanistan have also been included in the projects.”

Under these projects, Punjabi University will develop transliteration systems from Kashmiri, Sindhi, Shahmukhi, Balochi, Dari and Pashto to Devnagri and Roman and reverse. “We will also prepare digital dictionaries for these languages. In addition, we will develop machine translation systems for Sindhi-Hindi, Urdu-Hindi and reverse”, he said.

He said Punjabi University will also develop robust recognisers for recognising printed text in scanned documents for 13 Indian languages, including Punjabi, Hindi, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Urdu, Marathi, Sanskrit, Dogri, and others.
