Qualcomm Snapdragon rebrand: What we know so far

Today, chipset manufacturer Qualcomm issued a big announcement. Starting this year, it will be rebranding its most prominent products, namely its lines of mobile processors. That means the current Snapdragon 8xx, 7xx, 6xx, etc., names will be no more.

We are right on the cusp of the expected launch of the next Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, which up until now was thought to be the Snapdragon 898. Although that doesn’t appear to be the real name, it’s very likely that chipset would be the first (or one of the first) to feature the new branding.

Unfortunately, Qualcomm is being tight-lipped about what the new naming convention will be. Here’s what we know so far.

Qualcomm says its new brand names for its mobile processors will be shorter and simpler. First, its own company name won’t be a part of it, with only Snapdragon remaining. Interestingly, the company already technically did this with the Snapdragon 888 Plus, which is officially listed without the Qualcomm label.

Next, it will ditch the three-digit numbering scheme in favor of a single digit. It also confirmed that the “8” series will remain the flagship model. However, it’s possible there could be more info there or some sort of alteration.

What has us curious is how this naming scheme would allow for multiple 8-series chips. For example, the three-digit numbering system allows for both a Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 870 to launch at the same time. It is unclear how the company would do this with just one number.

According to the company, it tested out two different naming systems with over 2,000 customers. Whatever the next name ends up being, it apparently would have been seen as the best by those 2,000 testers.

It is very likely Qualcomm could announce the new name when it launches the next 800-series chipset, which we expect to happen next week. Stay tuned.
