Qualcomm wants to connect 100 million Indian homes with Jio 5G – Times of India

Reliance Industries chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani announced that Jio will bring 5G services to all parts of India by December 2023 at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022 event that was held last month. Earlier, Ambani also announced the collaboration between Jio Platforms and Qualcomm that will help the company to locally manufacture critical equipment needed to improve the 5G ecosystem in the country.
Jio has already started the initial roll-out of 5G in India and Qualcomm wants the network to reach more households in the country as soon as possible. A top executive of the US-based chip-making company has reportedly confirmed that Qualcomm is putting in more effort to ensure that 100 million Indian homes are connected to Jio 5G through its 5G fixed wireless access, including the millimetre wave (mmWave). The chip maker is working with Jio to ensure that its chipsets for the 5G fixed wireless access and the Open RAN 5G network.

How Jio 5G will help India
According to a report by IANS, Ignacio Contreras, the senior director of product marketing at Qualcomm has said that Jio’s 5G network will help the rural population of India to “get faster access to health and education”. He also added that Qualcomm is currently working with Jio on “various components of 5G innovation”.
Contreras even mentioned that India’s 5G rollout can set an example for several countries that want to roll out new technologies in “a faster, seamless way.” He noted that 5G connectivity will help users residing in remote parts of the country to connect with healthcare providers in Metro cities. 5G will be able to connect without any lag which will in turn help with quicker online diagnosis and treatment.

Jio 5G rollout progress in India
As per the report, Reliance Jio is natively building its 5G network which includes the core and the 5G radios. Qualcomm and Jio were recently able to achieve over 1 Gbps speed on the Jio 5GNR solution using Qualcomm’s 5G RAN platforms.
Jio is planning to build a pan-India true 5G network and the company has already committed a total investment of Rs 2 lakh crore. Last week, Jio expanded its 5G services to Bengaluru and Hyderabad after the successful beta launch in six cities. The company has claimed that Jio 5G users are currently experiencing speeds between 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps on their smartphones.
