Qualcomm’s computer CPU could hit the markets as early as 2024: Report | Digit

Qualcomm is gearing up to release a desktop CPU in 2024. The CPU is codenamed “Hamoa.” Although the company has not revealed the details directly, GSMArena seems to have learned about the processor through a reliable source.

Qualcomm is one of the largest smartphone chip manufacturers

To give a quick context, Qualcomm is among the largest smartphone chip manufacturers in the world. Its Snapdragon chipsets are the go-to choice of leading smartphone brands, including Samsung, Xiaomi and others. However, the company is yet to set its foot in the desktop CPU market, where names like Intel and AMD are popular.

As per the report, the Hamoa chip will have 12 cores in an 8 + 4 configuration: eight high-performance cores and four power-efficient cores. Qualcomm desktop CPU will use Nuvia’s Phoenix core design, developed by engineers who have worked with Apple in developing its ARM-based chipset.

The report mentions that Nuvia’s core design promises a 50 to 100% performance increase in a 5-watt per core limit. However, the data is based on numbers from 2020. The chip will also support “discrete GPUs.” The Qualcomm 12-core chipset is expected to offer high performance. If that happens, it would be the first time users can use ARM-based Windows computers based on Qualcomm’s chipset.

In a related development, Qualcomm is finalising the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and might reveal the flagship chipset at the Tech Summit 2022. The processor has already been spotted on the popular benchmarking platform called Geekbench.
