Ever since Apple added MagSafe charging with the iPhone 12, there has been no shortage of both first-party or third-party MagSafe accessories. The latest one comes from Razer and it is very different from other MagSafe accessories that we have seen so far.
The gaming accessories maker has launched a Phone Cooler Chroma that is designed to keep the iPhones cool while playing games. The company has also launched another version of the cooler with a clamp for older iPhones and Android devices.
The Phone Cooler Chroma costs $60 and for the price, it comes with Razer Chroma support with RGB lighting that can be controlled via Bluetooth and a seven-blade fan for efficient cooling.
To operate the cooler, users need to plug in the device to a USB Type-C port to power it, so users will either need to stick to the power outlet or use a power bank instead all the time, at least while playing the game.
The question here is how beneficial this $60 investment is going to be. Apple iPhones are already known for their pretty good thermal efficiency, thanks to Apple A14 or A15 Bionic chipsets. Even Android smartphones today come with an extensive cooling system built-in.
Snapping an additional fan at the backside of the phone isn’t new. Asus already has an external cooling fan for its ROG Phone 3 and ROG Phone 5. Realme too has recently launched a cooling fan for smartphones.
As mentioned, there are no data available on how effective this external cooling system is going to be, but Razer’s approach here seems to be an overkill considering whatever performance boost it is going to offer, users will have to stick to the power outlet all the time to get it.
