Remember the 3310? New Nokia Android phone may be MORE indestructible
Those who remember the iconic Nokia 3310 will know how much punishment it could take. That device, which launched back in 2000, was almost indestructible with owners able to throw it around without fear of it breaking – there’s even a video on YouTube showing how it could survive being shot with a handgun.
As manufacturers have moved to all-glass designs, thin chassis, and multiple camera lenses…it’s been a while since we’ve seen a handset that could take as much punishment as the original 3310.
But that could all be about to change. HMD Global, the manufacturer that owns the Nokia brand, is back with a new device that might just match the strength of the 3310. Dubbed the Nokia XR20, this new handset is built to survive pretty much anything life throws at it.
Made from premium materials, the XR20 has been given military-grade certification with Nokia promising that it can cope with falls up to 1.8 metres and you can submerge it in water for up to an hour without fear of it breaking.
An IP68 rating also means it’s dust, dirt and sand-resistant plus it can also withstand both freezing and scorching temperatures between -20 °C to +55°C.
Helping the screen stay crack-free is the latest Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which Nokia says is the toughest screen yet on any of its phones.
If you do manage to break it, Nokia says it will replace the screen free of charge during the first year of ownership.
Speaking about the unbreakable design Nokia said: “The latest X-series smartphone is resilient enough to handle even the most demanding challenges of everyday life, from being dropped on the driveway to taking a dunk in the bath or being scrubbed with soap and water.”
Along with being tough, the XR20 comes packed with other features including full access to 5G data speeds.
There’s also wireless charging, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor and 128GB of internal storage that can be boosted via a MicroSD card.
Finally, Nokia is promising security updates for up to four years, a three-year warranty plus all the latest Android features with up to three years of OS version upgrades.
The Nokia XR20 will be available to pre-order in the UK from Nokia.com/phones starting 27 July with stock available imminently. It comes in Ultra Blue and Granite colour options with prices starting from £399 for the 64GB model and £449 for the bigger 128GB version.
“We are tapping into consumer pain points around durability and longevity. We did a global trend report8 and found that 73% of consumers want to keep their phone for longer and would if their devices were maintained over time, said Florian Seiche, CEO, HMD Global.
“At HMD, we are empowering people to avoid early device replacement and encouraging a more sustainable consumption through our longevity promises. We are delighted to announce the Nokia XR20 – a life-proof phone with our trademark sleek, Nordic design that we built for both consumers and enterprises.”
