Samsung Galaxy S8 gets surpise security update

TL;DR

  • A new security update is rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy S8 series in at least one country.
  • However, the Galaxy S8 line reached its end-of-life, so it shouldn’t be seeing any more updates.
  • It’s possible this has to do with a recent Qualcomm hardware flaw, although it’s unclear at the moment.

Back in April this year, the Samsung Galaxy S8 series received what was supposed to be its final update. Since the devices launched in 2017, they had reached the end of Samsung’s update promises.

However, according to SamMobile, a new update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus is rolling out now in Bolivia. It has firmware version G95xFXXUCDUE1 and includes the May 2021 Android security patch. Usually, updates for Samsung phones roll out in European locales first before hitting other areas. It’s reasonable to assume this update will land in other countries soon.

The question, though, is why this is happening? It’s possible it has to do with a Qualcomm hardware issue that was patched in the May 2021 security update. Since the Galaxy S8 series missed out on this with its final April 2021 patch, Samsung might have felt it important enough to push one last update.

While this is great news for Samsung Galaxy S8 owners, don’t get your hopes up that you’ll see more patches in the future. The Galaxy S8 series is definitely done and likely won’t get anything else after this one. Although, that’s what we thought in April, so who knows what Samsung might have in store.
