Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Galaxy Z Fold3: What’s new – Times of India

Samsung was one of the first manufacturers to pioneer the foldable form factor commercially with the Galaxy Z Fold. Now, three years later, the company has introduced the fourth iteration of its foldable smartphone – the Galaxy Z Fold4.
Well, Samsung’s last foldable – Galaxy Z Fold3 –has been one of the best foldable smartphones of the last year, so the question here is what improvements does Galaxy Z Fold4 bring over the last generation, and are those upgrades worth the extra money? Let us compare the two – Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Fold3 – to find out which one is better.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Galaxy Z Fold3: Design
The two – Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Fold3 – are two foldable smartphones that offer a larger screen estate when unfolded. There’s a little difference between the two; however, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is slightly shorter and wider. It is also a little lighter, weighing 263 grams, while the Galaxy Z Fold3 weighs 271 grams. Both the foldables come with an IPX8 rating for water resistivity.
So, there is merely no difference between the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Fold3 in terms of design.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Galaxy Fold3: Display
The cover display on the Galaxy Z Fold4 measures the same as the Galaxy Z Fold3, i.e. 6.2-inch. Galaxy Z Fold4’s inner display measures 6.7-inches, the same as the last generation. Both outer and inner displays are 120Hz OLED panels with a dynamic refresh rate.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is said to come with a new and stronger ultrathin glass with a much stronger adhesive, making the display on the Galaxy Z Fold4 is 45 per cent stronger than the one on the Galaxy Z Fold3.
Furthermore, the Galaxy Z Fold4 supports the S Pen like its predecessor, and it still does not work on the outer display.
Just like the previous iteration, there is no notch, thanks to the under-screen front facing camera. Samsung says that the new under-display camera has been improved, this time being less distracting while offering better image quality.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Galaxy Fold3: Performance
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset powers the Galaxy Z Fold4. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold3 comes with the Snapdragon 888. Both the foldables come with 12GB RAM and 256GB/512GB internal storage. However, the Galaxy Z Fold4 comes in a new 1TB storage option.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Galaxy Fold3: Software
One major change between the two is the software. The Galaxy Fold3 was launched with Android 11 and later received the OneUI 4.1 (Android 12) update. The Galaxy Z Fold4 runs OneUI 4.1.1, based on Android 12L – a much well-optimised software for foldable smartphones and tablets. So, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 should offer usability improvements over its predecessor.
You may ask what Android 12L is? So Android 12L is an optimised version of the base Android 12 for larger screens. The Android 12L offers a much more polished UI for larger screens including foldables and tablets. Further, it comes with a better multi-tasking and app experience for larger screens.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Galaxy Fold3: Battery and charging
Both the foldables have a 4400mAh battery and support 25W fast wired charging. Well, there is an upgrade in the wireless charging speed; the Galaxy Z Fold4 supports 15W wireless charging compared to 10W on the Galaxy Z Fold3.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Galaxy Fold3: Camera
The cameras have been a major weakness of Galaxy Z Fold, but things seem to be changing with the latest iteration.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 comes with a 12MP triple camera. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 features a triple camera setup, but the main camera has been upgraded to a 50MP sensor, the same sensor found on the Galaxy S22 and S22+. However, the ultrawide sensor remains the same at 12MP. The telephoto sensor is now a 10MP sensor with 3x optical zoom.
Both the foldables have a 4MP sensor under the display. But, Samsung says that the front camera on the Galaxy Z Fold4 should offer better image quality. The outer camera also remains the same at 10MP.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 vs Galaxy Fold3: Price in India
Samsung has not announced the pricing details in India. However, the Galaxy Fold4 comes at a starting price of $1,799 (around Rs 1,42,325) in the US, which is the same as the Galaxy Z Fold3. So, we expect the price to remain unchanged, which means that Galaxy Fold4 might start at Rs 1,49,999 in India.
